Elections for a total of 60 wards in Thoothukudi Corporation were held on the 19th. The turnout was 59.11 percent. Out of a total of 60 wards, the DMK won in 43 wards, its ally Congress in 3 wards and the Marxist, Communist Party of India, Madhyamaka and Indian Union Muslim League in one ward each. AIADMK contested in 60 wards and won in only 6 wards. Independent candidates won in 4 wards.

Meanwhile, Subbulakshmi of the 2nd Ward, Geetha Murugesan of the 14th Ward and Babbathi of the 37th Ward, who had won as independents, joined the DMK. Thus, the strength of the DMK has increased to 46.

Also, the number of DMK councilors is 47 as Ramu Ammal, who contested and won under the Udayasooriyan symbol in the 28th ward on behalf of Madhimuga, is considered to be a member of the DMK.
