His arrest by the Thoothukudi District Crime Branch police stemmed from a complaint filed by a TVK functionary. The complaint alleged that during a public meeting in Kovilpatti on July 18, Markandeyan made defamatory and threatening statements, specifically claiming that Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) lawmakers would break the bones
of the Chief Minister inside the Legislative Assembly.
Historical Defiance and Prison Comparisons
Addressing reporters immediately after his release, Markandeyan framed his detention within the long history of his party, arguing that imprisonment is a familiar crucible for the DMK. He invoked foundational political figures to underscore his point, noting that former Chief Minister M.
