A phenomenon that could become more and more frequent. “Climate scientists are clear: we will have longer summers and more frequent, earlier and more intense periods of heat wave”, explains journalist Simon Ricottier, present on the 19/20 set of France 3, Wednesday. Indeed, according to the IPCC, “We have a one in ten chance each year of having a heat wave in June”continues the journalist, who adds that in 2030, “it will be a one in five chance”against a one in two chance in 2050.
Moreover, at the end of the 20th century, “there were three to four days of heat wave on average each year in France”while at the end of the 21st century, “there will be 20 to 35”, reports Simon Ricottier. Fighting against these heat waves is a challenge for the planet, but also for our economy. “Researchers have even measured the economic impact of these heat waves: from 0.3 to 2% of European GDP, depending on the region, this is what the last heat waves of 2003, 2015 or 2018 cost”, says the journalist France Télévisions. Indeed, from a temperature of 33 degrees, a worker would lose 50% of his productivity, ie his work capacity.
