A low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has been named Mantus after it has strengthened into a storm.

The practice of naming storms around the world began in 2004. When more than one storm forms at the same time, they are given names to know which storm is coming and in which direction.

In that way, the number of member countries in the International Meteorological Organization located in Switzerland is 191. These countries have been divided into 7 regions and each region has been named separately by the World Meteorological Organization.

In this, Bangladesh, India, Iran, Maldives, Oman, Pakistan, which are members of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia Pacific (ESCAP) in order to identify the tropical storms formed in the Indian Ocean regions including the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Myanmar have chosen 13 countries.

In that way, each country has 13 names each for a total of 169 names given to the World Meteorological Organization, and names are given to storms on a rotating basis.

In this situation, the Indian Meteorological Department has given the name ‘Mantus’, which was already chosen by the United Arab Emirates, to the storm that formed yesterday in the Bay of Bengal. It means ‘treasure box’ in Arabic.

Yemen has already suggested the name ‘Mega’ for the next possible storm. Before Cyclone Mantus, Cyclone Chitrong made landfall on October 25 between Tinkona Island and Sant Vip in Bangladesh. It is noteworthy that this Chitrong name was suggested by Thailand.
