The old pesetas that citizens delivered to the Bank of Spain will end converted into beer kegs or ship propellers. The National Factory of Coin and Stampunder the Ministry of Finance, has decided to put up for auction all those collected during 2021 and 2022. But, not in the form of a coin, but of scrap. Specifically, nothing more and nothing less than 360.180 kilosas he has been able to corroborate THE SPANISH NEWSPAPER, from the Prensa Ibérica group, on the State Contracting Portal. The sales process will be online and will be awarded to the highest bidderbut no high bids, as in the movies, it will be in a sealed envelope: those interested will send their economic proposal electronically and the highest one will be chosen.

This auction, as confirmed by sources from the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre, is a trifle, compared to “the great demonetization that the arrival of the euro brought about, between 2002 and 2003, where 6,603 million coins were dealt with, whose joint weight exceeded 30,400 tons“. The entity does not carry out this type of process on a regular basis: the Bank of Spain collects coins and, when considerable volumes are reached, they are destroyed and the resulting metal is auctioned.

Nine lots and almost 20 million euros

To get hold of the scrap of pesetas (and a few euros) you have to dig deep into your pocket. The base budget of the tender, without adding taxes, is 19.13 million euros and the value they give to the contract from the Royal Mint is more than 21 million.

However, with the intention that the disbursement is not so high, the agency dependent on the Ministry of Finance has divided the scrap into nine auctions. The first three lots are of more than nine tons, each one, they are made of 925 thousandth silver. The largest package, at 134 tons, is made of lunifal, an alloy of nickel, iron, aluminum, copper and manganese. On the other hand, although there is a 74-ton batch of gold, it does not shine because it is Nordic gold, an alloy of copper, aluminum, zinc and tin, the material used for coins such as the current 50-cent coins. In addition to these, a good number of kilos of aluminium, coated steel and cupro-nickel are released on the market.

Who can be interested in these auctions? From the National Currency and Stamp Factory they explain that the aluminum of the one peseta coins can be used to make beer kegs, For example; he cupro-nickel can be used to do new currencies, pipelines or in the automobile industry; he bronze with aluminumof the 50 or 100 pesetas, has been used in the construction of large ship propellers; aluminum with magnesium in the food industry, automotive auxiliary industry and construction; and silver of 925 thousandths in electronic circuits of the industry or, in more mundane things, such as the production of cutlery or medals.

Difficult operation for the buyer

It must be the successful bidder who picks up your purchase in the Community of Madrid because The Royal Mint does not make home deliveries. The successful bidder will have to pick it up and will not have the right to delay the collection because, after 30 days to organize the transfer, each day of delay will entail a penalty of 1,500 euros. It also requires having a “trailer-type truck, with rear load, box height between 1 and 1.20 meters, without rear lift or retractable loading platform under the truck”; without exceeding 24 tons each trip. This means that, to pick up the heaviest batch, a minimum of six trailers are necessary.

According to the specifications, the entity will deliver the “laminated and demonetized” coins without bagging and inside drums, each weighing 585 kilos. What the buyer can do is make sure the merchandise is of good quality. Always advising “with sufficient notice”, the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre will lend you a calibrated scale in which you can sample 3% of the material.

It will not be possible for anyone to buy one of these scrap lots: if it is a company that wants to do so, it must have a annual business volume exceeding half a million euros and you must prove it with your Mercantile Registry accounts. In the event that the buyer is self-employed, he must open his inventory books and also present his annual accounts.

If someone is interested, 63 days remain to present an offer for any of the lots, until next September 9. Although be careful, you should not stop watching the price of metals that, if they go up or down, the offer may be outdated, high or low.
