PSYCHOLOGY – This neurological disorder affects 4% of the population… without them being aware of it or feeling any discomfort.

An old friend calls you, and immediately mental images flood into your brain: his face, this heavenly corner where you spent your vacation, this shared drink on a Parisian terrace… But for some, no images. And for good reason: they suffer from aphantasia. “Their brain seems incapable of creating mental images and therefore of representing a place or a face.explains Dr Paolo Bartolomeo, neurologist at the Brain Institute (Pitié-Salpêtrière, Paris), author of Think straight and of Latest brain news (Editions Flammarion).

If this inability to represent mental images has been known since the end of the 19th century, the name aphantasia is much more recent (2015), as are the studies devoted to it. One of the first questions asked by the researchers was what difference it made not to create mental images. It seems that memory and the ability to imagine the future are affected.
