During the international bowel cancer month in March, we ask for extra attention for this disease. On Tuesday 22 March at 12:00, Koen Peeters and Jurjen Boonstra will answer questions about colon cancer via a live consultation on Facebook and Instagram.
Since the introduction of the population screening in 2014, early forms of colorectal cancer have been diagnosed more and more. Colon surgery is still an important part of the treatment of colon cancer. Together with a European network, Leiden University Medical Center is investigating whether and when the choice can be made not to perform surgery, without adversely affecting the patient’s life expectancy.
Treating colorectal cancer without surgery
In some patients, the response to pre-treatment with radiotherapy and chemotherapy is good enough to forego surgery. New techniques enable the MDL doctor to recognize and remove early forms of colorectal cancer more often than before. “We enter into a conversation with the patient, so that we can regularly prevent bowel surgery that is sometimes too burdensome for a patient,” says Jurjen Boonstra.
