In some cases, waking up at night is considered the norm. But sometimes you need to see a doctor.

As the somnologist, specialist of the European Society for the Study of Sleep, Alexander Melnikov, told the Prime agency, a few short nighttime awakenings can be attributed to the norm. But it is important how quickly a person falls asleep after that. Prolonged lack of sleep in such situations may indicate insomnia.

You should also find out the cause of nocturnal awakenings.

“Often a person experiences various pain sensations in a dream, sometimes gastroesophageal reflux (reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus) becomes the cause of intermittent sleep, sometimes other fairly obvious reasons,” the expert explains.

An important indicator is also how rested a person feels in the morning. If you can’t get enough sleep at night, Melnikov recommends getting a sleep study. This is especially true in the presence of snoring with breathing disorders during sleep.

In case of health problems, you should seek the advice of a specialist.
