The Court of Justice of São Paulo (TJ-SP) made the obstetrician Renato Kalil defendant. He is accused of psychological violence and bodily harm during the birth of the daughter of influencer Shantal Verdelho. The Court delivered the decision on Thursday 27.
The TJ-SP decision was unanimous and occurred in response to the appeal filed by the influencer’s defense and by the Public Ministry of São Paulo (MP-SP), reversing the lower court decision that closed the case.

In anticipation of refuting the lawsuit, Kalil’s defense plans to appeal to the Superior Court of Justice (STJ). The doctor’s lawyer, Celso Vilardi, argues that the TJ’s decision was purely procedural. In the statement, Vilardi expressed confidence in Kalil’s final acquittal.

According to reports from Verdelho, Kalil practiced verbal and physical abuse during the birth of her second daughter, in September 2021. Leaked conversations and videos suggest that the doctor belittled the mother with several offenses.
Verdelho claims that Kalil used a disapproved technique known as the Kristeller Maneuver. According to her, the doctor pressed her belly to speed up the delivery – a procedure that puts both the mother and the baby at risk.
However, due to the lack of evidence, Carlos Alberto Corrêa de Almeida, from the 25th Criminal Court, rejected it and asked for the case to be closed. This led the Public Ministry and Shantal Verdelho’s lawyer, Sergei Cobra, to appeal.

When reversing the decision, TJ-SP considered the facts presented through a video recorded during childbirth. Furthermore, the testimony of 20 women came as further reinforcement for the prosecution.
On another front, the Regional Council of Medicine of the State of São Paulo (Cremesp) also started an ethical-professional investigation against Kalil. This procedure, pending since December 2020, could result in Kalil’s medical authority being revoked.
