The thesis defense will now be accompanied by an oath of scientific integrity.

These are only a few lines of text but they make France a world exception in the landscape of academic research. Since a decree published on August 26 in the Official Journal, France is the only country in the world to have enshrined in law an oath centered on scientific integrity for all graduates of a national doctoral degree (DND), all disciplines and regardless of the establishment.

“This oath has a dual purpose, on the one hand to reinforce the visibility and appropriation of the issues of scientific integrity, on the other hand to bring more solemnity to the defense of the thesis and to contribute to valuing the doctorate, including for young doctors who would pursue a career outside of academic research”comments the Pr Stéphanie Ruphy, President of the French Office for Scientific Integrity (Ofis) who participated in the development of this text.
