A group of doctors in the United States performed an unprecedented surgery to repair a potentially fatal condition in the brain of a baby still in the mother’s womb.
During routine tests, doctors identified that the baby had a rare prenatal condition called a vein of Galen malformation (VOGM).
The problem affects the arteries that carry high-flow, high-pressure blood from the heart to the brain. If maintained after birth, this malformation would have serious effects on the heart, brain and lungs and could cause death soon after birth.
The procedure, conducted by teams at Boston Children’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, involved a technique called in-utero embolization, which was performed when the fetus was 34 weeks old (the final stage of pregnancy).
The doctors were guided by ultrasound and successfully repaired the malformation of the vein of Galen.
Due to the surgery, however, the baby was born two days later, naturally. The exams showed that little Denver’s heart was practically normal.
No cardiovascular support was required. The neurological examination was normal, and she also had no stroke, fluid accumulation, or hemorrhage on an MRI of her brain.
