Doctors strike in DM: Patients and relatives suffer

Doctors are on strike at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. They have stopped medical services from all the wards including the emergency department and outpatient department of the hospital. Hundreds of patients who come to the hospital for treatment are suffering.

The doctors joined work on Sunday (1st September) morning, but they left the hospital as the afternoon progressed.

The medical officers of room 1 of the emergency department closed their rooms around 9:30 am today. Along with that, the ticket counter of the emergency department was also closed. As the day progressed, the number of patients in front of the hospital increased. During this time, most of them were seen to go to other hospitals without getting a doctor.

Rubel, who brought a patient named Jummon Mia from Munshiganj to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said, ‘My uncle brought me here due to chest pain. But I am taking Heart Foundation due to strike of doctors.’

Mohammad Babar Ali, who brought Zainal Abedin from Savar’s Ashulia, said, ‘My brother fell down from the third floor and was seriously injured while walking on the roof this morning. After bringing the doctors to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, I am taking them to another hospital.

It is to be noted that the One Stop Emergency (OSEC) doctors of the emergency department were beaten up yesterday on Saturday due to the death of a patient due to medical negligence in Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The incident of vandalism also happened in the emergency department. The doctors announced a strike today to demand punishment for those involved in the incident.

In charge of DMK Police Camp. Bachchu Mia said that the doctors have been on strike since eight o’clock in the morning. Hundreds of patients have suffered. Many patients are inside the hospital waiting for treatment, while many are moving to other hospitals.
