Documentary on Nilgiri tribal couple raising 2 baby elephants after their mother was separated: Oscar shortlisted

Ooty: Asia’s largest domesticated elephant camp is located at Theppakkad, Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Nilgiris district. Baby elephants rescued after being separated from their mothers in the forests, wild elephants that disturb residential areas are caught and cared for here. Currently, more than 20 elephants are being cared for here. Pagans belonging to the tribe maintain these elephants as an eye and sight.

In this, Bomman and Belli couple from the Kattu Nayak tribe work as elephant caretakers. Last year in 2017, a male baby elephant was rescued from Dhenkanikottai, Krishnagiri district, after being separated from its mother and wandering around with injuries. In Sathyamangalam area, Ammu, another elephant who lost her mother in 2018, is also being cared for. The task of caring for two baby elephants who were separated from their mother was entrusted to a tribal couple, Pomman and Belli.

This tribal couple became the mother and father of two cubs. Ooty-based documentary director Karthiki Konsalves has been filming the story of this tribal couple for the past two years. The documentary short film titled ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ has been released on the OTT platform and is receiving good response. The documentary short was nominated for the Documentary Short category at the 95th Academy Awards. It has now been shortlisted for the award. If shortlisted, there is a chance of an Oscar.
