Dodgers sign All-Star outfielder Teoscar Hernández to one-year, $23.5 million deal

The Los Angeles Dodgers have added another big name to their impressive offseason roster, as they agreed to a one-year, $23.5 million contract with All-Star outfielder Teoscar Hernández late Sunday night, sources confirmed to MLB.com. The club has not yet confirmed the deal.

Hernández was a highly sought-after player this offseason, receiving offers from multiple teams including the Red Sox and Angels. Ultimately, he chose to sign with the Dodgers to be a part of what is expected to be one of the top offenses in Major League Baseball.

Known for his consistent power at the plate, Hernández has hit at least 25 home runs in each of the past four full seasons. Despite a slightly underwhelming 2023 season, he is still considered a valuable addition to the Dodgers’ lineup, especially when facing left-handed pitching.

With Hernández on board, the Dodgers are not expected to add any more position players this winter. The team has explored options at shortstop, but nothing has materialized.

Hernández’s plate discipline has been a point of concern, as his chase rate was a career-worst last season. However, when he does make contact, he consistently stings the ball with an impressive hard-hit rate and barrel rate.

Although not known for his elite defense, Hernández does provide value in the outfield with his strong and accurate arm in right field. His 12 assists last season were among the top in the league.

Hernández’s most productive full season came in 2021 when he hit 32 home runs, drove in 116 runs, and compiled an impressive slash line with the Toronto Blue Jays.

The addition of Hernández further solidifies the Dodgers as a strong contender heading into the 2024 season, adding even more firepower to an already formidable lineup.
