Each May 5th commemorates the International Day of the Midwife. It is a date that recognizes a fairly old profession, although it currently generates divided opinions. It’s all because some consider it archaic and dangerous for pregnant women.

What is midwifery?

Midwifery is an activity that for centuries was practiced and studied by the female gender due, in large part, to the ancient restrictions or taboos that patriarchal society imposed on the study and care of the physiology and pathologies of the female body, such as cancer. breast, menstruation, pregnancy and childbirth.

For its part, the Ministry of Health (SSa) affirms that the midwifery is a model to provide care with quality and warmth during the pregnancy, childbirth and puerperiumsince the future mother has a satisfactory and non-violent experience, with benefits for her physical and mental health.

Regarding the International Day of the Midwifethe SSa highlighted that another benefit of this practice is the rapid physical recovery of the woman after childbirth, because invasive procedures that can alter her physical and mental health are not used.

Midwives, as they are popularly known, have ancestral knowledge, techniques and skills, based on principles and values that dignify human, reproductive and health rights and non-discrimination against women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.

Midwifery is considered an intimate space for family integration, because it involves parents in the birth process, within a framework of respect for the culture and traditions of the communities.

What types of midwifery exist in Mexico?

  • Professional: It is what people who graduate from an educational center do.
  • Certified: It is what occurs when knowledge is obtained through courses or diplomas taught by a health institution.
  • Traditional: It is recognized by the communities and whose knowledge is transmitted from generation to generation or by inheritance and in native languages.

To incorporate professional midwifery practices in health services nationwide, it is necessary to create enabling environments for childbirth care, spaces in which comprehensive care is provided to women and their newborns; Without a doubt, LPR (Labor, Delivery and Recovery) rooms in health units contribute to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality.

Why is International Midwifery Day commemorated on May 5?

In 1992, this anniversary was established, proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO). The choice of the date is due to the fact that the May 5th 1922 was created in Belgium on International Union of Midwives (International Midwives Union). Although in 1954 it changed its name to International Confederation of Midwives (ICM).

In it International Midwifery Daydeclared by the United Nations (UN) the May 5thspecialists from the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) called to value the work carried out by midwives in favor of the health of women and newborns, as well as to recognize the struggle of this sector over the years so that their work is recognized and transcended in the communities.
