Inflation is the most common economic term in recent years. Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the most serious problem of the global economy has been price increases. Anti-records related to inflation have been registered in many countries in recent years. The effect of inflation in Azerbaijan has reached the highest level in recent years. Last year, the officially declared inflation in the country was 14 percent. This was the highest level of inflation recorded in Azerbaijan since 2008, when the global financial crisis occurred. The food products, which the population spends half of their money on, became more expensive by more than 20 percent. Inflation remains high this year as well. According to the statement of the State Statistics Committee (SSC), the inflation rate in the country is 11.7 percent. This is twice higher than the inflation target range (2-6 percent) of the Central Bank.
Although the official inflation index in Azerbaijan is quite high, many people think that these figures do not reflect the real situation. In addition to ordinary citizens, independent experts also think that the figures announced by the State Security Council do not fully reflect the real situation. The study of the “Meyar” Socio-Economic Research Group on alternative inflation measurement also confirms that there are challenges in the process of calculating inflation in the country.
