This past Friday, July 26, a touching case of animal abandonment had a positive outcome at the TransMilenio station Calle 146. The animal was discovered near the station exit, next to the dog were two plates with food and water, and a sign that said “I seek shelter (1 day)”. This scene generated great indignation among users of the mass transit system, who found the abandoned dog when passing through the ticket office.

The situation quickly escalated on social media and messaging groups, triggering a wave of solidarity among citizens and station staff. At seven o’clock that evening, TransMilenio SA confirmed through a statement that the dog had been adopted by a woman, who left her personal details in an official report to confirm her kind action.

The staff at the Calle 146 station applauded the community’s quick response and the woman’s decision to adopt the dog. This case not only highlights the problem of animal abandonment in Bogotá, but also the ability of citizens to mobilize and act in favor of animal welfare.

However, this incident is not an isolated case. Just a few weeks earlier, on Tuesday, July 9, another dog was found on a TransMilenio bus heading to the Suba portal. The animal, which was traveling on route C25, was found by the bus driver and later adopted by an employee of the TransMilenio security and surveillance area.

The increasing number of cases of animal abandonment in the mass transit system is alarming. As of May 2024, 56 cases had been reported within TransMilenio, compared to 140 cases in 2023 and 52 in 2022. These numbers underscore the urgent need to address this issue and ensure the well-being of animals in the city. The story of the abandoned dog at Calle 146 station, although it ends with a happy ending, highlights the importance of empathy and responsibility towards animals.
