Rock Springs Woman Accused of Poisoning Roommate’s Dog, Faces Felony Charges
A Rock Springs woman is facing felony animal cruelty charges and perhaps up to two years in prison after allegedly poisoning her roommate’s dog, ultimately leading to the animal’s euthanasia. The case has drawn scrutiny due to the defendant’s familial connection to a local law enforcement official.
The charges against allie erspamer stem from an investigation initiated after a report of possible animal poisoning was made to the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office on September 29. According to court documents filed by Sublette County and Prosecuting Attorney Clayton M. Melinkovich, Erspamer is charged with one count of felony cruelty to animals, carrying a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment and a $5,000 fine.
The Sweetwater County commissioners appointed Melinkovich as a special prosecutor on August 19, a move typically reserved for cases where a conflict of interest may exist within the Sweetwater County Attorney’s Office. Erspamer is the daughter of Rock Springs Police Chief Bill Erspamer.
A preliminary hearing initially scheduled for Wednesday was waived, and arraignment in Sweetwater County District Court is pending.
The investigation revealed a timeline of events beginning in December 2024, when the dog’s owner adopted a puppy. The following month, Erspamer moved in as a roommate and, according to the owner, quickly “expressed distaste” for the animal. The dog began experiencing seizures in mid-March, coinciding with an incident where Erspamer claimed the dog bit her – though the bite did not break the skin.
Between March and April 17, the dog’s health deteriorated, prompting a visit to a veterinarian who recommended euthanasia. Following the euthanasia, the dog’s remains were sent to the Wyoming Veterinarian Crime Lab in Laramie for a necropsy. The lab’s report confirmed acute kidney failure resulting from antifreeze poisoning.
Investigators learned from an unnamed source close to Erspamer that she had inquired about obtaining antifreeze, though the request was reportedly denied. Further investigation uncovered Snapchat messages allegedly sent by Erspamer, in which she claimed to have sprayed the dog’s treats with bleach. A search warrant served to Snapchat by the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) confirmed the existence of these messages.
Following the dog’s death, Erspamer and another individual allegedly exchanged messages discussing how to avoid detection, including crafting deceptive narratives. Furthermore, investigators found evidence that Erspamer used Snapchat’s AI search engine to research the effects of both antifreeze and bleach on dogs, specifically querying “can an autopsy on a dog show antifreeze poisoning?”, “what about bleach?”, and “how long would it take for bleach to kill a dog?”.
Dr.Margaret White, who examined the dog, initially noted signs of acute kidney failure and recommended euthanasia. Her assessment was later corroborated by the Wyoming Veterinarian Crime Lab.
