Labrador Retriever Survives Harrowing Rescue After Being Swept Out to Sea Off San Diego Coast

A black Labrador retriever-mix is recovering after a dramatic rescue approximately half a mile offshore near South Mission Beach, following a frightening ordeal where she was swept out to sea by a powerful rip current.

The incident unfolded last month when Sadie,a young dog,wandered away from the home where her owners were staying during a football game,according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Her owners were able to track her location using an Airtag attached to her collar, but alerted authorities when they realized she was in danger. Surfers in Ocean Beach frist alerted lifeguards to the situation, reporting a dog struggling against the current near the jetty.

A comprehensive search was launched, involving a US Coast Guard boat and lifeguards utilizing personal watercraft.Lifeguards Garrett Smerdon and Jack Alldredge spent over an hour scouring the channel, battling fading hope as they were informed the search would be limited to a final ten minutes.

“At that point, I kind of just said, ‘Please let us find this dog,'” Alldredge recalled.

Smerdon added that knowing Labrador Retrievers are naturally strong swimmers and resilient animals, there was still a possibility Sadie could be alive. Despite being called off the search, Alldredge spotted something in the distance.

“We got closer and closer, and then we realized it was her and we were pretty excited,” he said.

In a video message, barcellos recounted the agonizing moment they heard the news. “And held our breath, and they were like, and the dog is alive,” she said, overcome with emotion. “And we kind of just started crying right away.”

“we are just beyond grateful she is home safe with us,” Barcellos said.
