Newfoundlands can swim 5.6 kilometers pulling life rafts with six people, and Labradors can pull 2.4 tons in the water

Dogs dressed in special life jackets – this is what some of the rescuers look like along the coasts of the beaches in southern Spain. Labrador and Newfoundland breeds are mainly relied on for the four-legged patrols on Levante Beach near Malaga, BTA claims. Dogs and their handlers can be seen on both jets and lifeboats.

The animals underwent special training, their pulling power, swimming endurance and ability to detect sea currents being particularly valuable.

The endurance and strength of dogs exceeds that of most humans.

Newfoundland dogs can swim 5.6 kilometers pulling life rafts weighing up to three metric tons or six people, and Labradors can pull 2.4 tons in the water and use their keen sense of smell to locate missing people.

“They can detect ocean currents that humans can’t,” says dog trainer Miguel Sanchez.
