Local Animal Rescues Struggle as Shelter Closes Due to Virus Outbreak

In a devastating turn of events, dozens of dogs have been affected by a virus, resulting in the death of four of them. The situation has become even more dire as the local shelter, a common refuge for many stray and surrendered animals, has been forced to close its doors amidst the outbreak. With nowhere else to turn, animal rescues in the area have stepped up to address the urgent need.

“Animal rescues kind of fill the gap. They can pull from shelters, they can also accept owner surrenders,” explained one of the rescue representatives. However, the capacity of these rescues is already stretched thin. One rescue group recently saw an influx of 15 puppies born under their care, further adding to their already full facilities.

“It’s the worst I’ve ever seen,” expressed another rescuer, highlighting the overwhelming number of owner surrenders and individuals trying to give away their dogs. Additionally, social media platforms are flooded with posts offering pets for free, further emphasizing the desperate situation.

Rescues, like the one run by Matthews, often specialize in providing care for dogs with medical or behavioral issues, making it challenging to find suitable homes for them. “We have to turn away a lot more than I would really, really like, but again, it’s based on the foster base. With all of our fosters completely full, we unfortunately just can’t take it,” Matthews shared.

Ashley Williams from the Wake County Animal Center emphasized the vital role that rescues play in saving lives. “So 30% of our live releases are going to our rescue partners. So we’re talking thousands of animals,” Williams stated. However, with the shelter closed and rescues already at full capacity, the situation is becoming increasingly concerning.

“It’s going to lead to a lot of dog deaths, especially with the cold weather out there with people just dumping their dogs outside,” Matthews expressed her worries about the impending consequences of the limited resources available.

Local rescues are pleading for additional support from the community. “It’s the only way we’re going to be able to help right now with what’s going on,” emphasized one rescue representative. The dire situation calls for increased awareness, support, and adoption opportunities to save these animals from a grim fate.

As the virus outbreak continues to take a toll on the local dog population, it is crucial for individuals to consider adoption, fostering, or supporting local rescue organizations to alleviate the strain on these already overwhelmed facilities. Together, the community can make a difference in ensuring the well-being and survival of these vulnerable animals.
