Dolce & Gabbana Faces £400m Debt While Jennifer Lopez Boosts Milan Runway

Jennifer Lopez sat front row at Milan Fashion Week as Dolce & Gabbana debuted its Stravaganza Siciliana Spring 2027 ready-to-wear collection. The maximalist runway presentation arrives as the independent fashion house manages a nearly £400m debt pile and works to attract a new generation of buyers.

Jennifer Lopez, Front-Row Style, and the Milan Runway

Earlier in the week, Jennifer Lopez walked down the Vogue World catwalk wearing a black beaded A-line bustier dress from Dolce & Gabbana. On Saturday, she sat in the front row at the Italian house’s womenswear show in a three-piece velvet suit from the same brand, topped off with a baker-boy cap or dark beret, as The Guardian and Yahoo reported.

That high-profile celebrity presence underscored a deliberate strategy for the independent brand. While rivals like Gucci and Bottega Veneta belong to Kering and Fendi is owned by LVMH, Dolce & Gabbana remains independent. The Milan show offered a vital dual opportunity: reminding loyal fans of its Sicilian heritage while courting the Gen Z audience needed to spark sales.

Financial Pressure and the March 2028 Debt Waiver

Behind the glamour of Milan Fashion Week, the brand faces serious financial restructuring. In a turbulent luxury market, The Guardian noted that the company is trying to handle a nearly £400m debt pile.

In August, following years of controversies, the company secured an agreement with its banks giving it until March 2028 to settle its debts. In exchange for that waiver, the brand agreed to execute extraordinary corporate transactions, which include offloading certain properties. Meanwhile, Stefano Gabbana, who stepped down as chair at the beginning of the year, holds an ownership share approaching 40% and is actively weighing options for his stake.

Generational Dressing and the Stravaganza Siciliana Collection

Titled Stravaganza Siciliana and staged against a backdrop of a Baroque frescoed family palazzo, the Spring 2027 collection leaned heavily into maximalist extravagance. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana embraced the concept that eccentricity equals total freedom, mixing antique-inspired lace, crochet, damask, and brocade fabrics.

The central creative thesis focused on generational dressing, with clothes passed down through family archives. A voiceover played at the start of the show set the tone for the runway.

Women today do not look at it as though it were a museum. They try things on, layer and mix. Grandmother dresses granddaughter.

Models wore antique-inspired lace dresses and crocheted skirts paired with cropped tweed jackets, heavy jewelry, and low-slung denim jeans decorated with dangling crucifixes and devotional medals. Leopard print appeared across croc-leather coats, miniskirts, cardigans, and capes. Every look was punctuated with pearls, cameos, coral appliqués, and sparkling jewel buttons.

Artisanal Craftsmanship and the Search for Relevance

The collection showcased meticulous craftsmanship, from military-green jackets adorned with coral appliqués sourced from the Sicilian sea to pristine white dresses featuring centuries-old needlework techniques. WWD noted that dainty pumps, boots, and handbags received the same heavy embellishment treatment, highlighting the enduring skill of the brand’s artisans.

As Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana took their bow — Dolce in all black and Gabbana in a leopard print shirt celebrating 41 years of partnership — the brand sought to prove it can make the past modern. As another voiceover line in the Emirates Woman review succinctly stated, Today, true extravagance is to be unrepeatable.
