Kayce Dutton faces a brutal reckoning in the Season 2 premiere of the CBS crime drama “Marshals,” as a rescue mission across Wyoming state lines culminates in a fatal car crash that leaves Tom Weaver’s daughter dead and shifts the franchise’s family dynamics.
The hit CBS series returned on Sunday, October 4, 2026, with an action-packed episode titled All Hat No Cattle.
Written by showrunner Spencer Hudnut and directed by Christopher Chulack, the premiere picks up the pieces from the explosive season 1 finale, which left viewers wondering if characters like Cal Calvin and Belle Skinner had survived a coordinated hit.
Tate Dutton Kidnapping Sparks a Wyoming Rescue Mission
At the center of the premiere is a high-stakes rescue. Last season ended with rancher Tom Weaver orchestrating attacks and kidnapping Kayce’s son, Tate, under the guise of a fishing trip to pressure Kayce into handing over his East Camp property. While viewers initially anticipated a trip to Texas, the premiere revealed that Weaver actually holed up in nearby Wyoming.

When Kayce realizes his son has been taken, he goes rogue, igniting the same relentless fire seen during his days on the Dutton family ranch. Armed and driven by pure instinct, Kayce tracks the kidnappers to Wyoming, pursuing Weaver and Tate in a high-speed vehicle chase.
Kayce Spares Tom Weaver After Crash Kills Dolly
The confrontation ends in tragedy. As Weaver and his daughter, Dolly Weaver, try to escape, their Jeep Cherokee careens out of control down a hill.
While Tom Weaver survives the wreck, the crash kills Dolly — a character who had begun a flirtatious relationship with Kayce while caught in the middle of her father’s corruption. Rather than executing Tom, Kayce chooses to spare his life, believing that living with the consequences of his actions is a harsher penalty.
“Obviously we’ve seen Kayce take his vengeance out on people before,” says Grimes. “But at the end of the day, the worst thing he could have done to Tom is have him just sit around and think about what he’s done for the rest of his life – in prison.”

Luke Grimes on Kayce Dutton’s Continuing Romantic Misfortune
Dolly’s death leaves Kayce once again grieving a romantic partner, compounding the emotional toll he has carried since the death of his wife, Monica Dutton. In interviews surrounding the premiere, Grimes reflected on his character’s perpetual bad luck in matters of the heart.

“Clearly, Kayce has very bad luck in his life,” Grimes tells USA TODAY. “He opened himself up a little bit, and he got hurt. Hopefully that doesn’t deter him from opening up in the future.”

Despite opening up to Dolly, Kayce continues to wear the wedding ring of his past wife, Monica.
Future Alliances and Romantic Twists in Season 2
Even with Dolly gone, Kayce’s romantic future holds potential complications. Marshal Andrea Cruz. Hudnut teased that the pair will grow closer during the first half of the season, though challenges lie ahead.
Meanwhile, the broader ensemble is shifting. Tate, having nearly lost his life, reminds his father that he intends to take a more active role in protecting his family—a protective instinct that brings tension between father and son. The season also welcomes familiar faces from the broader universe, including Jefferson White reprising his role as Jimmy Hurdstrom, alongside recurring appearances from Marque Richardson as Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Burns.
The series renewed its commitment to building out its core ensemble alongside Grimes. At a recent CBS virtual press conference, Grimes and Hudnut joined co-stars Logan Marshal-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos and Tatanka Means to preview what’s next for the hit drama. Fan love for the Taylor Sheridan-produced hit series exploded as Season 2 kicked off, with Grimes launching the new season in grand fashion alongside co-stars Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos and Brecken Merrill at an NFL game, Las Vegas tailgate, and premiere celebration rolled into one at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 4.

While some fans and critics pointed out fumbles with the sophomore start — noting that the Yellowstone attack was resolved almost immediately — the production leans into its strengths by utilizing real on-location shooting in Montana. The core cast includes Logan Marshal-Green as Pete “Cal” Calvin, Arielle Kebbel as Belle Skinner, Ash Santos as Andrea Cruz, and Tatanka Means as Miles Kittle. In the premiere, Cal and Belle survive their tense confrontation.
Concurrently, Taylor Sheridan’s broader franchise underwent notable adjustments behind the scenes. While Sheridan recently canceled the planned 6666 spin-off that would have followed Jimmy Hurdstrom in Texas, White’s character has officially transitioned to join Marshals Season 2 instead. This creative pivot resets portions of the franchise’s trajectory while maintaining the gritty Western spirit fans expect across Paramount platforms.
