(ANSA) – TORRE DEL GRECO, APRIL 14 – The carcass of a dolphin was found in the morning off the port of Torre del Greco (Naples). The discovery was made by volunteers from the Fondalicampania Aps association, and occurred during the operations of the Mare Lab project, which involves the study of microplastics along the surface of the sea.
The volunteers promptly reported the discovery to the competent authorities, and then posted the news on their web channels: “From the photos – they explain – the evident presence of a net between the animal’s teeth emerges, so it cannot be ruled out that it died in due to a ghost network”.
The phenomenon of ghost nets is quite widespread in the Gulf of Naples: these are nets that are abandoned for various reasons at sea and represent a threat to the marine ecosystem.
“This shows – they conclude from Fondalicampania – that we need to pay greater attention to the protection of the sea: a more effective awareness campaign would be necessary, as well as constant monitoring of the seabed to stem the phenomenon of ghost nets”. (HANDLE).
