But who could have eaten dolphin in Douarnenez in Finistère? After the discovery of a butchered dolphin in a garbage can in the city, revealed by the NGO Sea Shepherd, an investigation was opened and a septuagenarian was heard on Thursday, we learned from the Quimper prosecutor’s office and from the police station.

This resident of Douarnenez, a retired fisherman born in 1947, was heard by agents from the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB). He said he discovered the freshly stranded dolphin, scooped it up and cut it up to eat, before throwing the rest of the animal in the trash.

The body of this dolphin had “been found in a trash can on rue Jeanne-d’Arc in Tréboul”, a district of Douarnenez, on Monday May 1, according to the Sea Shepherd association, which posted a photo on Twitter on Wednesday.

“The way he was butchered leaves no doubt that his flesh was consumed, which is strictly prohibited. We are filing a complaint for mutilation of a protected species,” added the association. The Quimper prosecutor’s office had not received a complaint on Thursday.

Sea Shepherd has been active for several years against dolphin fishing, whether intentional or accidental (by fishing boats retrieving dolphins in their nets). Hundreds of dolphins have been stranded on the French coasts in recent months.
