The first export of the Surion, a multipurpose helicopter made by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), has been completed.
KAI announced on the 23rd that it had signed a Surion export contract with the Iraqi government. The contract amount is 135.77329 billion won and the contract period is from March 31, 2025 to March 31, 2029. KAI said, “The end date of the contract period is the expected final delivery date,” and “It may change depending on future progress, and any changes will be re-announced.”
According to local Iraqi media, the Iraqi Ministry of the Interior also announced on the 22nd (local time) that it had signed a contract to introduce two Surion helicopters through social networking services (SNS). The Iraqi side said, “This is a contract to introduce two special fire-fighting aircraft,” and “It also includes the cost of training Iraqi helicopter pilots and maintenance technicians.”
Iraq was mentioned as the first import country for Surion. In March of this year, it was reported that high-ranking Iraqi military officials, including Army Aviation Commander Samir Zaki Hussein al-Maliki, visited Korea and rode a Surion directly when traveling from the metropolitan area to the KAI headquarters in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province.
Surion is the first domestically produced mobile helicopter that has been developed since 2006 by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, the Agency for Defense Development (ADD), and KAI. In Korea, 300 Surions are being operated in fields such as military, police, coast guard, firefighting, and forestry.
