The Greek Police issued a guide to citizens regarding the submission of complaints about incidents of domestic violence.

In the EL.AS guide. information is provided on the duties of police officers, as well as the steps to be taken by those who wish to report incidents of domestic violence.

As stated in the manual, the prosecution of domestic violence is ex officio. “This means that the competent police services have the obligation to act immediately, when they are informed in any way, by the victim himself or by a third person, about the commission of any crime of domestic violence.”

“It is not required to deposit a fee or any financial burden”, it is added. Clarifying the definition of domestic violence, EL.AS. notes that it includes physical violence (physical injury, dangerous and grievous bodily harm, methodical infliction of severe physical pain or physical exhaustion) and verbal violence (threat, stalking, etc.).

“If domestic violence is being committed against me or against another member of my family, if I cannot understand that what is happening is domestic violence, if I fear for the life or physical integrity of myself or another member of my family, if I know that a fellow human being is being subjected to domestic violence, then I turn to any Domestic Violence Office or Police Department to find out about the procedures, the legislation and my rights”, says the EL.AS guide.

It is reminded that regardless of whether or not a summons has been submitted, police officers are obliged by law, when they receive information about the commission of domestic violence offences, to file a case file and inform the competent prosecutor.
