Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has signed a new five-year contract keeping him at Anfield until the summer of 2031, ending intense speculation over his future and cementing his status among the club’s top earners.
The long-term agreement follows months of detailed discussions between Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes and the player’s representatives. Entering the final two years of his previous deal, the midfielder had drawn admiring glances from Real Madrid, but the fresh terms successfully close the door on any potential exit.

The midfielder arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2023 in a £60million move from RB Leipzig. Over subsequent seasons, he has developed into one of the most complete midfielders in European football.
That development paid dividends during a testing 2025-26 campaign that ultimately ended with the sacking of Arne Slot. While the team surrendered its Premier League title defense and flirted with missing out on European qualification entirely, the Hungarian international emerged as the definitive standout performer.
Operating across multiple positions, he contributed 13 goals and 12 assists in 53 appearances across all competitions last season. That output made him the first Liverpool midfielder to reach double figures in both scoring and assists since Steven Gerrard achieved the feat during the 2013-14 season.
A Bulwark Against Real Madrid Speculation
The swift resolution of these contract talks stands in stark contrast to a turbulent period of roster turnover at Anfield. Liverpool lost several high-profile figures as free agents at the end of last season, including Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, and Ibrahima Konaté. The latter ultimately joined Real Madrid, mirroring the path taken by Trent Alexander-Arnold the previous year.
Had negotiations dragged on into the upcoming season, Liverpool would have faced the precarious prospect of the midfielder entering his final year. Instead, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the agreement elevates the player into the club’s top bracket of earners through June 2031.
Lofty Ambitions Under a New Manager
With his long-term contract finalized, the midfielder immediately turned his attention toward silverware, setting his sights firmly on continental glory. Despite the club’s struggles last term—during which he memorably remarked that the team should be happy with the Conference League amid a dismal run of form—his competitive appetite remains entirely unquenched.
