Domino of operational collapse in hospitals, dissolution by privatization – What P. Papanikolaou (OENGE) complains

by time news

The miserable situation that prevails in public hospitals was presented once again by P. Papanikolaou, general secretary of OENGE speaking on talkradio 98.9, at a time when the Minister of Health Ad. Georgiadis tours the islands and receives mass disapproval for the government’s policies.

As reported by P. Papanikolaou, on August 19, the Association of Hospital Doctors of Samos reported that the only pediatrician of the island’s hospital, after working consecutive shifts, suffered a vascular ischemic attack and was transferred to a hospital in Attica. ENIS reiterates its call for staffing the hospital with the required staff, while the estimate is that understaffing reaches 50% on an island with 200,000 people in the summer season.

As P. Papanikolaou pointed out, after 20 hours the minister responded about the incident and despite the sheet of excuses he invoked he essentially admitted the government’s responsibilities after proceeding to replace the hospital administrator.

On August 20, an on-call cardiologist at the Molaon nursing unit in Laconia, which is responsible for the entire eastern “leg” of the Peloponnese with a lot of tourist traffic (Monemvasia, Elafonissos, Neapoli, etc.), denounced the on-call unit as unsafe as she is alone without even a pathologist present, while the surgery department has only one orthopedic surgeon and that after 3 in the afternoon!

On August 21, another on-call doctor at the Milos Health Center, which also has a lot of tourist traffic, reported that he is on call alone as a general practitioner, without a pathologist, a radiologist, on an island where the nearest hospital is 80 nautical miles away.

Wild… crack at Ad. Georgiadis in Leros

In the meantime, the Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, faced fierce disapproval from the residents of Leros, outside the island’s hospital, shouting slogans for the dissolution of the National Health System – ESY.

Adonis Georgiadis, who is continuing his failed tour of the islands, where hospitals and health centers are collapsing, received strong boos, with people shouting “You’re not ashamed” while chants of “Hands off the hospitals” prevailed ” and “You close them, instead of upgrading them”.

“Health – People’s right. Social good. Not a commodity and a privilege for the few. Hands off Mental Health and addiction”, health workers wrote on a banner held outside the Leros hospital.

Almost any hospital in the Dodecanese visited this summer, received a similar reception, with disapproval but also episodic conversations with doctors and public health workers,
