Time.news – In the heart of Rome, a few meters from the Capitoline Hill and the Colosseum, in the basement of Palazzo Valentini there is an important archaeological area of ​​over 1800 square metres, where there are the wonderful remains of two Roman domus and the spas that stood where Piazza Venezia is today with a view of Trajan’s column. Almost twenty years after its opening to the public, the archaeological area of ​​the Roman Domus of Palazzo Valentini, located in via Foro Traiano 84, has undergone a technological restoration of the original immersive/multimedia project conceived by Piero Angela and Paco Lanciano thanks to a public-private partnership agreement between the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital and Civita Mostre e Musei.

The new project, based on the use of new generation, high definition video projection systems, which has allowed make the visit inside the excavations even more profound and emotional. The audio diffusion system, which plays an important role in building an immersive experience, has also been completely renovated, introducing individual listening via headphones that reproduce the various comments and the soundtrack of the experience in high quality available in Italian , French, English, German and Spanish, allowing a large international audience to fully enjoy the multimedia experience.

The combined effect of the new projection technologies and the new audio diffusion system deeply involves the visitor of the Domus, making him live a memorable immersive experience, now also multilingual. In the Italian version the story of the Domus is narrated by the voice of Piero Angela while for the other languages ​​the text is translated and interpreted by professional dubbers.

The exploration of Domus The visitor sees “reborn” wall structures, rooms, peristyles, baths, halls, decorations, kitchens, furnishings, thus taking a virtual journey inside a large Domus of ancient Rome. A unique and precious example of how the artistic heritage of antiquity, restored by careful and rigorous restoration and redevelopment work, can be enhanced through the integration of new technologies.

The extensive visit to the Domus of Palazzo Valentini includes three archaeological areas:

1) the reception rooms of the Domus, where the owner of the house received his guests;

2) the sector of the Baths which were inside one of the Domus;

3) the remains of a public building, perhaps a temple dedicated by Emperor Hadrian to Trajan and Plotina Divi. A film accompanies the visitor in the reconstruction of the history and events narrated on Trajan’s Column. Inside the museum, rooms intended for the display of archaeological finds alternate with multimedia visits. In the last visit area it is also possible to see part of the bunker built in the basement of the Palace during the Second World War, which has maintained its original structure.

“At the Domus Romane of Palazzo Valentini, not only was the archaeological area protected, but the original multimedia and immersive project was also protected”, underlines Giorgio Sotira, CEO of Civita Mostre e Musei who invested 900 thousand euros to create this project entirely financed by private individuals. Civita Mostre e Musei expects expenditure of 3.5 million in personnel costs and high-intensity services for the next 10 years.

Always for the next 10 years the forecast is 500 thousand visitors. “A true digital restoration was carried out which allowed us to modernize an old system with modern and more sustainable equipment – adds Sotira – as well as guaranteeing multilingual use which takes into account the nature of the site, loved by both residents and tourists. Civita is proud to have proposed an operation that guarantees protection, sustainability, valorisation and innovation (of product and method) at the same time”, he concludes.
