Washington: Senior US diplomat Donald Lu is scheduled to visit India and Bangladesh this week. The US State Department said that the purpose of Donald Lu’s visit is to reaffirm America’s commitment to supporting the economic development of American partners and promoting stability throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Donald Lu is serving as Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia in the US State Department, but he is accused of bringing about regime change in many countries.

Donald Lu will first travel to New Delhi where he will highlight cooperation between the US and India to strengthen development, security and women’s economic security at the ‘India Ideas’ summit organised by the US-India Business Council. Lu will be on the visit from September 10 to September 16 and during this time he will also co-chair the eighth US-India ‘Two Plus Two’ inter-sessional dialogue with US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo Pacific Security Affairs Jedidiah P Royal and counterparts from India’s Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Defence.
The US State Department said in a press release that the talks will identify opportunities to enhance the US-India bilateral partnership, including cooperation in the defence sector, and expand US-India cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
Donald Lu will meet the interim government of Bangladesh
Lu will be part of an inter-agency delegation for meetings with the Bangladeshi interim government in Dhaka. The delegation will include representatives from the US Department of the Treasury, USAID (US Agency for International Development) and the Office of the US Trade Representative. The US and Bangladeshi officials will discuss how the US can support Bangladesh’s economic growth, financial stability and development needs, the State Department said.
Why is Donald Lu ‘infamous’?
Donald Lu is accused of orchestrating the coup against Imran Khan in Pakistan. Imran Khan himself had taken his name publicly. Donald Lu’s name also cropped up in the recent violent protests against Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh. Reports claimed that Donald Lu had met Bangladeshi opposition parties and student leaders in a Middle Eastern country. Many reports also claimed that Donald Lu had secretly met Rahul Gandhi during his US visit last year. However, this could not be officially confirmed.
