According to the German Donations Council, the willingness to donate in Germany is returning to the pre-Corona level after two record years. German private households are expected to donate almost five billion euros this year, according to the interim report “Trends and Forecasts” presented by the Donations Council in Berlin. Last year it was around 5.7 billion. The reason for the decline is an expected normalization after the previous highs as a result of the Ahrtal flood and the war in Ukraine, it was said.

Between January and September, 3.2 billion euros in donations have already been collected. Experience has shown that the amount will increase during the Christmas season, but will not reach the level of the previous two years, the donation council said. Compared to the same period last year, 600 million euros less were donated. The most common donations are for humanitarian aid. Three out of every four euros donated were given for these purposes.

The over-70 age group donates the most

The number of donors has been decreasing for years. Only about one in five people in Germany donate at all. This is the lowest level since the survey began in 2005, when around one in three people donated. At the same time, the amount donated by an individual donation increases on average. According to the information, the average donation is around 37 euros; This is the third highest value after the last two record years, when the average donation was just over 40 euros.

According to the information, the age group over 70 is still the most willing to donate. She provides 42 percent of the total donation amount; Together with those over 60, they even account for two thirds of all donations.

The Donation Council referred to partial results of the ongoing “GfK Charity Panel” study, which is being prepared on its behalf. According to the information, the study is based on continuous written surveys among a representative sample of 10,000 panel participants from the private sector. Corporate donations, inheritances, and donations to political parties and organizations, among other things, are not included in these calculations.
