The hall of the Catholic parish center, the Johannes-Martin-Haus, was bursting at the seams at the benefit concert by the group Sing’n Swing. Some had to leave because there was no space left.

With this event, Sing’n Swing supports an innovative project of the Franciscan Sisters of Maria Stern in Juruti Velho in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest. Hammelburg has had a parish partnership with Juruti Velho since 2019.

The villagers keep offering the Star Sisters tropical fruits for sale. Because they often accommodate guests in their sister house, to whom they can offer the fruit. However, the supply of fruit is often so large that the sisters cannot accept everything. And the perishable fruits spoil quickly. So the sisters had an idea: they want to build a fruit processing factory on their property in cooperation with the fruit suppliers from the village. There the fruits are to be processed into a mush and frozen. The fruit pulp can be used for juice, desserts and ice cream. The intention is to resell to village shops and supermarkets. But the mush could also be used for school and kindergarten meals. For the families who harvest the fruits, this would secure a part of their livelihood.

The “fruit factory building project” costs 60,000 euros. The Congregation of the Sisters of the Faith cannot do this alone. Although it is supported by the Diocese of Würzburg, it needs further donations.

That is why the Hammelburg ensemble has now organized a benefit concert. Musical director Paul Oschmann provided the sounds on piano and organ. Supported by the bass (Jürgen Klose) and accompanied on the acoustic guitar (Philipp Oschmann), Peter Ludwig conjured up his solos on the electric guitar. With a drum solo in the Brazilian “Mas Que Nada”, Dieter Schmidt tore some of the seats off. The donation box filled up. Finally, the musicians were able to hand over 1000 euros for the project.

The fact that the evening had a Brazilian character was not only due to the South American rhythms, the decoration and the catering. There were also guests from Brazil: Daniela Machado from Óbidos and Gabriel Goncalves from Faró. The two came to Lower Franconia just two weeks ago for a voluntary year.

Further donations can be transferred to the account: Diocese of Würzburg World Church donations, IBAN: DE40 7509 0300 0603 0000 01
