Han Dong-hoon, former chairman of the People Power Party’s Emergency Response Committee, said on the 20th, “The only people politicians should not betray are the people,” and “Efforts to correct mistakes are not betrayal, but courage.”
Former Chairman Han wrote on Facebook late that night, “No matter what happens, I will not betray you or the people.” This is the first time that former Chairman Han, who took responsibility for the election defeat the day after the April 10 general election and stepped down from his position as emergency committee chairman, has made a statement since his resignation.
Former Chairman Han said, “If someone does that to me, even if it may not be pleasant for a moment, I will be grateful in the end, because that’s how our community works properly.”
This is interpreted as a remark aimed at Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo, who has been raising claims of responsibility for former Chairman Han every day since the People Power Party’s crushing defeat in the general election. On this day, Mayor Hong left a post on the online communication platform ‘Youth’s Dream’ criticizing former Chairman Han, who he said was “a person who even betrayed President Yoon Seok-yeol,” and former Chairman Han’s post is read as a rebuttal to this.
Rumors of conflict were raised as former Chairman Han expressed different voices in the President’s Office regarding the suspicion of receiving luxury brand bags from First Lady Kim Kun-hee during his time as emergency committee chairman, the return of former Ambassador to Australia Lee Jong-seop, and the resignation of Hwang Sang-moo, former Senior Secretary for Civil Society in the President’s Office.
Former Chairman Han also expressed his intention to return to politics. He said, “I have the belief that sophisticated and powerful leadership can overcome difficulties when it meets the understanding and support of the people,” and added, “I will take time to study and reflect to become more sophisticated.” This can be interpreted as a statement suggesting that he will return to the political stage in the future. However, taking time to study and reflect can be interpreted as meaning that they will return after some time, rather than an immediate national convention.
Former Chairman Han also apologized again for the results of the general election. He said, “It is my defeat, not yours. “You guys were truly amazing,” he said, adding, “I will never forget the desperate looks on your faces that I saw at the campaign trail across 5,960 kilometers in a hot April.” He continued, “I am indebted to you all for not being able to win despite the desperation we shared. “I’m sorry,” he said.
He said, “Ten days have passed. You may be disappointed and discouraged, and you may be frustrated that you can’t see the path clearly, but let’s cheer up together. “It will work out in the end,” he added.
