Don’t miss my conference “Present: Tesla today” at the Caixa Forum in Seville at 7:00 p.m. It is part of the science cycle “The future belongs to Tesla”, which accompanies the exhibition “Nikola Tesla. The genius of modern electricity”, which I also recommend. «Nikola Tesla’s visionary ideas remain incredibly relevant today. It is not in vain that his inventions and concepts are the basis of many of the technologies we use in daily life, and his patents, part of our technological and scientific heritage, continue to inspire new advances and the invention of new technologies. In this talk, I will present some recent technologies inspired by his ideas and others that could have a great impact in the future. I will explain how Tesla already sensed in his day that the depletion of fossil fuel reserves would transform electricity into the energy source of the 21st century and how the ideas of the Serbian-Croatian genius play a fundamental role today.

The talk is moderated by Mayte Pascual de la Cueva, news journalist, Tesla scholar, author of several reports on his biography and specialist in new technologies. I must confess that my talk replaces (only in Seville) “The Contemporaneity of Tesla” by Àlvar Sánchez, professor in the Department of Physics at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
I must confess that I am not a Tesla fan. My talk will not be a hagiography, like the first biography of Tesla after his death in 1943, written by journalist James J. O’Neill in 1944; friend and fan presents Tesla as a superman. My talk attempts to be more historiographic, like the excellent 2013 biography of Tesla by Bernard Carlson, a historian specializing in inventors. Tesla had a prodigious decade between 1884 and 1894, in which he went from a nobody to a multimillionaire; but he fell as fast as he had risen in the following decade, between 1895 and 1905, through messianic megalomania. My talk will focus on the present, on how Tesla’s ideas have inspired many scientists and technologists in the development of different technologies that are used today. I will try to be as rigorous as possible regarding the future that awaits these technologies in this century. The 20th century was the century of fossil fuel energy. Tesla imagined a future in which all energy was obtained from electricity. The 21st century is the century of renewable energy and electricity, the century imagined by Tesla.
