Are you in Malaga on Wednesday, October 25? Don’t miss my conference “Towards artificial consciousness” at 12:30 p.m. in the Rector’s Assembly Hall (Paseo del Parque) of the University of Malaga. Organized by CONSIDERATION (Association of Retired Professors of the University of Malaga) the Day of the Retired Professor is commemorated. Admission is public and free until the capacity of the assembly hall is reached (no invitation is required).

Conversators like ChatGPT or Bing chat are the new trend in artificial intelligence. Its enormous and unexpected success raises many questions. What level of intelligence do they have? What degree of awareness do they have? Are we closer to artificial intelligence reaching human intelligence? Do we really need artificial agents to be conscious? Obviously, we do not know the answers to these questions. Which does not mean that they are current issues in the field of artificial intelligence. Large linguistic models based on pre-trained generative transformers (GPT) will be the leitmotiv of my talk on the path to artificial consciousness. My idea is to provoke reflection on these issues based on what we have discovered in the last twenty years.

My talk will be based on my many readings, although I want to highlight Masataka Watanabe, «From biological to artificial consciousness. Neuroscientific insights and progress,” Springer (2022), translated by Tony Gonzalez from the 2017 Japanese original; and Stephen Wolfram, “What Is ChatGPT Doing… and Why Does It Work?”, Wolfram Research (2023).

He official announcement of the conference serieshe announcement of my conference and the ticket reservation. The talk is moderated by Mayte Pascual de la Cueva, news journalist, Tesla scholar, author of several reports on his biography and specialist in new technologies. I must confess that my talk replaces (only in Seville) “The Contemporaneity of Tesla” by Àlvar Sánchez, professor in the Department of Physics at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
