Jatiya Party Chairman Gholam Mohammad Quader, demanding a fair election environment before the elections, said that both the parties had axed all the institutions through factionalisation. Have we ever gotten rid of partisanship in the administration and judiciary? I don’t want to change from one party to another.

On Monday (September 30), he said these things as the chief guest at an exchange meeting with the leaders of National Youth Solidarity in the auditorium of the Jatiya Party Chairman’s office in Banani.

Golam Mohammad Quader said that despite good elections in 1996, 2001 and 2008, the country did not get a good government. After a fair election we never got a proper politics. Our constitution has given all power to one person. The same person heads the executive, parliament and nearly 100% of the judiciary. All constitutional institutions are in the hands of the same person. For this reason, a famous quote by Lord Eton has been immortalized. He said, power can corrupt people. But, unlimited power definitely corrupts people. The constitution has been amended repeatedly to increase power. Under this constitution whoever is put in power in a fair election, he is bound to be a monster by force of power. We want not only fair elections, but fair governance.

Inquiring about the demand to amend the constitution by repealing the fifteenth amendment, GM Kader said that one-third of the constitution can never be repealed, it is not a logical thing. The Awami League government did not amend the constitution and hold a referendum. I think, only if someone makes a writ, His Highness will grant the matter. The constitution should be amended to create a people-oriented and accountable government system.

“We want local government elections before national elections. Only then, we will understand how much reform has been done in the election, whether the election will be fair or not. Whoever comes to power should not be a monster. We have confidence in the current interim government. We trust them personally too’ said Japa chairman.

Golam Quader said, on January 22, 2007, BNP did not organize the election as a single party? I boycotted that election too. One Eleven came and ended all plans for that election. In 2008, we formed a grand coalition against corruption, extrajudicial killings and partisanship. In the 2008 elections, the people voted Awami League to power. People thought Awami League would do good work, I thought so too. Awami League came to power in 2008 and broke all records of injustice and corruption. We boycotted the 2014 elections.

He said, our leader Hussain Muhammad Ershad said, we will not go to the election unless all the parties come. He said that the election schedule should be changed if necessary to bring BNP to the elections. Then Awami League detained our leader in the name of medical treatment. I announce the boycott of elections on the orders of Hussain Muhammad Ershad. 270 people including me boycotted the election. I myself did not participate in the 2014 election and did not go to parliament. Is it true that the Jatiya Party gave legitimacy to the Awami League in the election? BNP did not participate in the 2014 mayoral and upazila council elections in the Awami League government’s election system? All parties participated in the 2018 elections under their electoral system under the Awami League. If Jatiya Party legitimized the dictatorship Awami League due to participating in the elections under Awami League, then did BNP not legitimize the Awami League government by participating in the 2018 national elections and 2014 local government elections? After the 2018 elections, BNP members of Parliament held roles in Parliament for four years. So under the Awami League only we went to the election? All the parties went to the elections under Awami League. Our leader Hussain Muhammad Ershad supported Awami League in 2018. He knew very well why and under what circumstances he supported Awami League. However, we played the role of opposition party properly. I was removed as the Deputy Leader of Parliament during the 2018 to 2014 term. Because I used to say hard words in Parliament. After the death of our leader Hussain Muhammad Ershad, I was elected the Leader of the Opposition as per the decision of the parliamentary party of Jatiya Party. The Speaker did not accept our decision illegally. Because, I have always spoken the truth in Parliament. I have always spoken against government corruption and misrule. We have not supported Awami League in any immoral act. To do politics, you need a party. Again, without proper politics there is no party. We are forced to compromise something just to save the team. Think about yourself, what would you do if you were in such a situation? Awami League wanted to destroy BNP, Jamaat and Jatiya Party. He wanted to destroy BNP and Jamaat by suing and attacking and dividing the Jatiya Party. We did not want to save the party by sacrificing the interests of the people. We did not have any dialogue with Awami League about seats, we always wanted free and fair elections. Misinformation has been spread, I went to the polls for my wife’s seat. This is completely untrue. There was a conspiracy to destroy our team and our personal image.
