Doosan Bears have selected right-handed pitcher Keisho Shirakawa, who recently played for SSG Landers, as a replacement foreign player for injured Braden Waddell. Doosan is expected to make an official announcement as early as the 10th.
A Doosan official said on the 8th, “Internally, the team chose Shirakawa as Brandon’s replacement foreign player.”
Doosan previously decided to recruit a short-term replacement foreign player right after Brandon suffered an injury at the end of June. After weighing the options of veteran left-hander Eric Yokishi, who previously played for Kiwoom, and Shirakawa, Doosan ultimately chose Shirakawa.
Doosan’s selection appears to have been influenced by Shirakawa’s excellent performance while with SSG and Yokishi’s visa issues.
Shirakawa, who had only played in the Japanese independent league, joined SSG as a short-term replacement foreign player in May and recorded 2 wins, 2 losses, and an ERA of 5.09 in 5 games. Excluding the game against Lotte on the 7th of last month (8 runs (7 earned runs) in 1⅓ innings), his ERA was a respectable 2.49.
On the other hand, Yokishi, who has 56 wins (36 losses) on the KBO stage, recently had two tryouts with Doosan, but visa issues have become an obstacle. This is because Yokishi cannot play in KBO league games until he receives a work visa.
Due to the nature of the short-term contract of 6 weeks, if Yokishi waits to receive his visa, he will not be able to pitch in the first 1-2 games.
Shirakawa is free from these problems because he already received a work visa when he signed with SSG.
In addition, the fact that Yokishi has not appeared in an official game since July of last year and thus lacks actual game experience appears to have influenced Doosan’s choice.
Meanwhile, if Doosan proceeds with the contract with Shirakawa without any variables, an ‘official recruitment announcement’ is expected to be made on the 10th.
This is because, formally, KBO league teams excluding SSG can designate Shirakawa in reverse order of rankings for a week starting from the 3rd day when Shirakawa was announced on waivers. Fortunately, among the teams that can designate Shirakawa before Doosan, there are currently no ‘short-term replacement foreign pitchers’ in need.
