Jannik Sinner won the ATP tournament in Cincinnati just on Monday. On Tuesday, a positive doping test result was announced.

At the beginning of the year, the Italian Jannik Sinner won the Australian Open. On Monday he won the ATP tournament in Cincinnati. But now there is a stir surrounding the 23-year-old because of a doping case that the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced on Tuesday. Sinner himself also posted something about it on his Instagram profile.

What happened? The world number one tested positive twice for a banned anabolic steroid in March this year. Clostebol to be precise. He himself was informed of this in April. However, a tribunal ruled that this was not intentional.

The ITIA wrote on its website that “Jannik Sinner is not at fault or negligent for two anti-doping rule violations under the Tennis Anti-Doping Program (TADP).”

The statement on his Instagram profile also states: “After a thorough and comprehensive investigation, the ITIA and Jannik found that the accidental contamination with Clostebol occurred during treatment at his physiotherapist. His fitness coach bought a product that is available over the counter in any Italian pharmacy and gave it to Jannik’s physiotherapist to treat a cut on his finger.”

Sinner also “fully cooperated” with the ITIA. He is quoted in the statement as saying: “I will now put this difficult and very unfortunate time behind me. I will continue to do everything I can to ensure that I comply with the ITIA anti-doping program and I have a team around me that follows the regulations to the letter.”
