On February 5, 2020, at the remarkable age of 103, Kirk Douglas, the progenitor of one of the most popular Hollywood dynasties (father of Michael Douglas, who turns 78 just today, of producers Joel Douglas and Peter Douglas, and of Eric Douglas). Born on 9 December 1916 to a couple of Belarusian Jewish immigrants Issur Danielovitch (this is his real name at the registry office), he made his film debut thanks to Lauren Bacall, who reported him to the producer of the 1946 film The Strange Love of Marta Ivers. Over the course of his long career – most intense in the golden years of classic cinema between the 1950s and 1970s – he has played numerous tough roles (such as Stanley Kubrick’s Horizons of Glory, Spartacus, Challenge at the OK Corral) and, nominated for an Oscar three times, he was awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Statuette in 1996.
