From now on, undocumented immigrants in California will be able to receive Medi-Cal coverage.

This afternoon at Coachella they celebrated that the vulnerable community will finally have access to health insurance.

A new law allows irregularly living adults ages 26 to 49 to be eligible for Medi-Cal.

At Coachella today almost 100 community members registered to have access to medical care as soon as possible.

A long fight in California comes to an end.

The state’s health insurance program known as Medical has been extended to thousands of undocumented immigrants.

“To have something in case something emergency happens,” said Martin Alberto.

Alberto was one of the many who didn’t wait to register today. He makes his living in the fields and says that going to the doctor will no longer be a barrier for him or his co-workers.

“Things that they couldn’t pay for because of money, now it will be much easier for them to do so,” said Alberto.

With a mariachi and state leaders they celebrated in Coachella the new law that they hope will help improve the quality of life of many who live on scrap metal.

“Access to medical coverage, so they can go to their dentist, get their eyes checked, get checked, prevention, especially farm workers,” said Luz Gallegos, the executive director of the TODEC Legal Center.

It is estimated that nearly 700,000 immigrants throughout the state will benefit.

Immigration status is no longer an eligibility criterion, but people will have to meet the income limits per family group

“It is of utmost importance that they take advantage of this coverage of these benefits, which in reality is little of what our immigrant community deserves,” said Gallegos.

TODEC today registered almost one hundred farmers for the state program with the help of the county’s social services department.

Interested parties can apply online at benefitscal.com, by calling 1-877-410-8827, or with the county social services office.

“That this benefit does not impact the probability of having a visa in the future, if immigration reform comes, then this is very important, in relation to the public charge, it is not considered a public charge,” said Gallegos.

Martin says the registration process took no more than 20 minutes.

“The process was easy for me, because what they ask for is already on hand,” said Martin.
