Two French investigative judges ruled that the Sky ECC message was generated by the Canadian company Sky Global “primarily” and even “exclusively” for drug traffickers. A company defined as a communication network and service provider will not be selected by the inquiry. A customer is a customer.
During a major criminal trial in Paris, thirty people including factory workers, distributors, resellers and even middlemen in the financial circuit will be on the dock. The indictment was able to be consulted by AFP, which reports that it is no less than 685 pages.
According to the judges, all those involved “knew, or at least could not have an unconscious understanding, that this market is likely to attract the interest of criminal organizations operating in various drug trafficking sectors”.
Chief lawyer Jean-François Eap responded by telling the press that “Sky ECC never thought, or imagined, or marketed products for criminal use”.
Developed since 2013 by Sky Global, Sky ECC is an encrypted messaging app installed on conventional phones but its business is done in secret. Purchased in cash or virtual currencies, prices rise to more than 2,000 euros for six months of use. The encryption system of the telephone solution then makes it possible to exchange in complete anonymity.
To prevent police access, no information is stored on the server. However, investigators from Belgium, the Netherlands and France were able to get to the bottom of it in 2019. From there, France managed to open a judicial investigation for criminal conspiracy.
Between 2017 and 2021, one of the vendors overseeing this project will have renewed phones and subscriptions for at least $850,000. New investigations are opening in Belgium, the Netherlands and the Balkans in order to dismantle trafficking cartels on the European continent. A great network that continues to make headlines.
