DPA: Guterres offered Merkel a job at the UN

by time news

UN Secretary General António Guterres has offered former German Chancellor Angela Merkel a job at the UN, the German DPA news agency reported, citing sources. According to them, we are talking about a position in the “high-level advisory body on global public goods.” The UN doubts that Mrs. Merkel will agree.

Mr. Guterres announced his proposal in an official letter sent to the ex-chancellor. Angela Merkel has not yet given an answer. At the UN, the likelihood that she will accept a job offer is considered rather low, clarifies DPA. Officially, UN representatives did not comment on the information.

The Global Public Goods Advisory Board is one of António Guterres’ flagship projects. The project was launched for the reform of the UN, and the Secretary General of the organization expected that former international leaders would work in it. The body must “identify global public goods and other areas of common interest where governance improvements are most urgent”. Mr. Guterres justified his initiative by saying that the coronavirus pandemic “revealed serious gaps in international cooperation,” writes the Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.

Angela Merkel served as Chancellor of Germany for 16 years. She has held this position since 2005 and left it in 2021 after the next parliamentary elections. According to media reports, after retiring, she receives a pension of about €15,000 per month (almost 1.3 million rubles).
