Bangladesh Hindu, Buddhist, Christian Unity Council Demands Action to End Communal Violence
Dhaka, Bangladesh – August 10, 2024 – The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council and Bangladesh Pooja Celebration Parishad issued an open letter to the government expressing deep concern over the ongoing communal violence across the country. The letter called for immediate action to end the bloodshed of religious and ethnic minorities.
The statement was presented at a press conference held at the Nasrul Hamid Auditorium of Dhaka Reporters Unity on Friday. The open letter alleged that the violence, which began on August 5, has resulted in the displacement and impoverishment of thousands of Hindu families in at least 52 districts. Many temples have been burned, and attacks have been reported against women and other minorities.
The letter claimed that despite attempts to bring the issue to the attention of the President, Army Chief, student leaders, and political party leaders, the situation has deteriorated in the past few days. It called for an immediate end to the violence and urged the government to take action to protect minorities.
The press conference was attended by journalist Vasudev Dhar, President of Bangladesh Puja Celebration Parishad, and several members of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad.
