Dr Bejani Chauke Facing Madlanga Inquiry Notice Over Msibi Chats

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has served former presidential adviser Dr Bejani Chauke with a notice to account for WhatsApp conversations with the late taxi boss Jotham Mswazi Msibi. The 2022 and 2023 communications involve sensitive surveillance technology and alleged efforts to influence criminal prosecutions.

Former presidential adviser and ANC national executive committee member Dr Bejani Chauke has been issued a notice under Rule 10.6 of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry rules. The inquiry requires him to explain text messages exchanged with late taxi boss Jotham Mswazi Msibi across 2022 and 2023. Chauke has remained silent on the matter, with his mobile phone showing him online while he consults with his legal team.

Cellular interception and jamming equipment valued at approximately R1 million was secured from European suppliers by Msibi, suspended South African Police Service Sergeant Fannie Nkosi, and private associates utilizing fraudulent police credentials along with official SAPS stamps. The scrutiny stems from data extracted from Msibi's cellphone.

Retired Hawks Head Testimony Links Private Investigator to Chauke

Private investigator Paul O’Sullivan contacted retired Hawks head Lieutenant-General Godfrey Lebeya seeking an update on the investigation while claiming to sit alongside Chauke, according to testimony regarding direct pressure on law enforcement leadership heard by the inquiry.

When he phoned me, he said that he was sitting with his friend who’s a doctor, and then I just need progress of the status of the case.

Lebeya identified that doctor friend as Chauke. The interaction exposes the private investigators, security officials, and political advisers intersecting around the probe. The commission continues its work investigating systemic corruption, criminality, and undue interference inside South Africa’s criminal justice architecture.
