“Dr Strangelove”, Stanley Kubrick’s satirical masterpiece turns 60

Eager to tackle a nuclear war-themed thriller, in the early 1960s Stanley Kubrick discovered the novel “Red Alert” by Peter George and began adapting it for the cinema under the Columbia Pictures banner. Although he set out with the intention of making a dramatic film, the events of the book struck the director as decidedly funny and ridiculous, so much so that he convinced him to convert the script into a political satire punctuated with grotesque absurdities.
