Doctor Yong Warns! Be Careful of COVID-19, Especially Among Students
Prof. Dr. Yong Phuworawan, Head of the Center of Specialization in Virology at the Department of Pediatrics Clinic, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, has issued a warning about the increasing trend of COVID-19, particularly among students.
In a post on Facebook, Dr. Yong warned that COVID-19 tends to increase seasonally, similar to the flu. He explained that while the disease can be found throughout the year, it is more prevalent during certain seasons.
“COVID-19 tends to increase as winter approaches,” Dr. Yong stated. “The first period of increased outbreaks is typically during the first semester or the rainy season, between June and August. It then tends to decrease before coming back again in the winter, particularly in December and January.”
Dr. Yong further explained that as COVID-19 evolves over time, it may eventually resemble the flu in terms of severity and seasonal patterns. He noted that as the majority of the population gains immunity from the vaccine and prior infections, the severity of the disease is expected to decrease.
“Further vaccines will only be needed for vulnerable groups, and the timing of vaccination should be before the start of the school year for students,” Dr. Yong advised. “In healthy children and young adults, who likely have immunity from past vaccines and infections, the severity of COVID-19 is expected to decrease, similar to the flu.”
The warning from Dr. Yong serves as a reminder for the public to remain vigilant and take precautions against COVID-19, particularly as the disease follows a seasonal pattern. As the severity of the disease decreases, similar strategies for care, practice, and prevention to those used for influenza are likely to be applicable.
