At a demonstration to prevent the expansion of a coal mine in West Germany, environmental activist Greta Thunberg was arrested and detained by local police forces. Thunberg joined thousands of activists who took part in demonstrations over the weekend in order to prevent the plan to evacuate the village of Lucerne in the west of the country, for the expansion of the coal mine in the area, which is owned by the German energy giant RWE.

After the evacuation is completed, the RWE company plans to erect a 1.5 km perimeter fence around the village, and to seal the buildings, streets and sewers before their complete demolition.

The activists for their part claim that the burning of coal will increase global warming, and will harm the ambition of the climate agreements from Paris, which aimed to limit the increase in global temperature.
