Draisy, the electric train that should revive the small rural lines of the Grand-Est

He was the protagonist of the European Mobilty Expo festival, which exceptionally moved to Strasbourg last week. Draisy, the last born of the Alsatian industrialist Lohr, attracted all eyes.

“This train will upgrade the small regional lines,” assures Julien Rat, director of railway operations at Lohr. Already nicknamed “the countryside train”, this new futuristic transport has 80 seats. Designed with the SNCF, this train has the particularity of running on electric batteries.

One billion euros to distribute it over fifteen small lines

“Small rural lines are very poorly electrified and this transport offers an autonomous solution,” explains Julien Rat. A train that aims to be very light, less than 20 tons, and that is close to the size of a bus, less than 14 meters. “This reduced weight will avoid damage to the old rails of some connections,” emphasizes the expert. This Draisy train will be tested for the first time on the Sarrable-Kalhausen (Moselle) line in 2026.

“The goal is to once again connect these small regional services to stations in medium-sized cities such as Sarreguemines, Sélestat or Haguenau. This will allow users who feel abandoned to benefit from modern railway resources, announces Lohr’s director of railway operations. But it is the Region that decides. » This is good news, the Grand-Est region plans to invest one billion euros to deploy Draisy on around fifteen small lines in the region by 2030.
