Canadian musician Drake has revealed himself as the new owner of a ring designed by rapper Tupac Shakur, who died in 1996 at the age of 25, and wore on his last public appearance. Drake, 36, posted a picture of a hand with the ring on on Friday Instagram. The auction house Sotheby’s then confirmed that Drake, who is currently one of the most successful musicians, acquired the piece of jewellery.

The ring was auctioned on Tuesday for around one million dollars (about 900,000 euros). At the auction in New York, according to the auction house, there was “determined competition between bidders”. Drake eventually won this contest with a total of $1.016 million. Sotheby’s had previously estimated the crown-shaped ring with gold, diamonds and rubies at only around $300,000. The amount raised was the highest ever paid for a hip-hop memorabilia at auction.

Shakur (“All Eyez on Me”) was one of the most successful rap artists of the 90s. In 1996, at the age of 25, he was shot dead in a Las Vegas street under unclear circumstances. Back then there were clashes between rival rappers from the east and west coasts.

Shakur had the jewelry made to celebrate his engagement to girlfriend Kidada Jones, Sotheby’s said. The inscription ‘Pac & Dada 1996’ is engraved on the ring. In 1996, the musician wore the ring at the MTV Video Music Awards, his last public appearance. Now his godmother Yaasmyn Fula released the piece for auction.
